The realization that millions of people throughout the world are hungry today and will be again tomorrow touches and troubles me deeply. There actually is enough food to feed everyone, but the means of getting it to those in need is the challenge.
A number of years ago with the help of great volunteers, I created a food program in northern California. Here we gathered perishable food from grocery stores, produce markets, caterers, bakeries and restaurants and delivered it directly to individuals and families. It was a win-win endeavor. The donors were grateful to have their fresh food given to people in the community, and the recipients appreciated the generosity. Some of our recipients also helped with the distribution. Today its resources have expanded, and because of this the number served has increased greatly.
For over 35 years, the Catholic Worker House in Redwood City, California, following the Catholic Worker model that no one is paid to work and no one is charged for services, has provided shelter and food to the very poor and young people at risk. Having watched the great service Larry Purcell and all the others give, I wholeheartedly support their dedication and service.
Once the necessities of food and shelter are not at risk, many other issues can be addressed. For the past thirty plus years Father Richard Rohr, a Franciscan priest, has gifted me and hundreds of thousands of others with his teachings of love, justice, and peace. In 1986, he founded the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Their mission of experiential education, rooted in the Gospels, encourages transformation of human consciousness through contemplation, equipping people to be instruments of peaceful change in the world.
